Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
This introduction to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) includes a remote lecture and a virtual laboratory work. It explains key concepts, standards of use and main clinical and research applications of TMS. The main aim is to provide the student understanding of basic principles of TMS and relevant aspects of the human brain anatomy and physiology. Another goal is to introduce navigated brain stimulation (NBS) technology, various TMS protocols and their clinical application as well as TMS safety.
After completion of the virtual lab work students will learn main parts of a TMS study (safety screening, equipment preparation and check, electrodes placement, data collection and reporting the results) and step-by-step mapping of the human motor cortex (co-registration, work with 3D brain model, use of navigation, motor threshold determination, electromyography and analysis of motor-evoked potentials).
